Project Overview

Premier Drainage Solutions was appointed by Toureen Group to deliver urgent remedial drainage works during the transformation of Shell’s Fulham site into its flagship all-electric vehicle forecourt—a landmark first for the UK. With sustainability at the heart of the project, it was essential to ensure the legacy drainage infrastructure beneath the site was brought up to modern standards.

What began as a simple blockage quickly evolved into a complex, high-risk excavation and pipe replacement project beneath a live urban forecourt.

Scope of Works

  • Initial Investigation & Obstruction Removal

The existing interceptor and 225mm lateral drain were initially believed to be blocked with debris. On further inspection, we discovered the problem was far more serious: a previous contractor had filled the interceptor and four metres of a Victorian brick-built 225mm sewer with high-strength concrete.

  • Concrete Removal Attempt

Our engineers first attempted to core out the concrete within the pipe. While technically effective, the method was extremely slow and unsuitable due to the volume and density of the concrete.

  • Excavation & Pipe Replacement

The only viable option was to remove the defective section Working at 4m depth, we constructed a new shaft and drove a timber heading to access and safely replace the damaged pipe.

  • Chamber Installation

A new 1200mm pre-cast concrete chamber was installed, constructed to Sewers for Adoption 7th Edition standards, providing a robust access point for future maintenance.

  • High-Quality Reinstatement

We reinstated the site using MOT Type 1 crushed aggregate, compacted in layers using a petrol trench rammer and reversible wacker plate to achieve full compaction. Steel starter bars and mesh were set before pouring concrete to match the existing slab finish—ensuring long-term durability and a seamless visual result.

Outcome

Despite unexpected conditions and a highly constrained urban site, the project was delivered efficiently and to specification. Our ability to adapt and apply specialist techniques in challenging environments was crucial in keeping this high-profile project on track.

The works now ensure the new Shell Fulham all-electric forecourt is supported by a safe, future-proofed drainage system—demonstrating our ability to combine technical excellence with practical delivery in complex, high-stakes settings.
