Pre-formed junction sewer connection

Overview:

Premier Drainage Solutions successfully completed a foul water sewer connection in Cambridgeshire, connection via a pre-formed junction onto an existing 150mm Anglian sewer within the highway. This project involved excavation depth to 2.5 metres, road closure, and reinstatement to strict highway standards — all delivered to Anglian Water’s asset specifications.

Key Requirements & Challenges:

• Highway Location & Traffic Management:

  The connection point was located within a live carriageway, and due to the depth and layout, a full road closure was required. This introduced a 12-week Section 50 licence lead time, necessitating careful planning and local authority coordination.

• Depth of Excavation (2.5m):

  Excavated using a 3-tonne machine, with safety and protection measures in place to ensure stability and protect the existing infrastructure.

• Precise Connection Method:

  The existing sewer was cut and replaced with a new 150mm pre-formed junction. The connection was secured using two flexible couplers, ensuring long-term integrity under ground pressure and flow conditions.

Our Solution:

1. Lateral Sewer Installation:

   Laid a new 100mm lateral pipe on a stone bed and surround, leading to a newly installed pre-cast concrete manhole at the property’s boundary.

2. Full Road Closure Management:

   Developed and implemented a diversion route to safely direct traffic during works. We worked closely with local authorities to gain approval and meet all safety regulations.

3. Highway Reinstatement to Specification:

   • Compacted MOT Type 1 in layers using a mechanical trench rammer.
   • Cut edges sealed with bitumen edge sealer before applying the specified asphalt.
   • Finished with thermoplastic overbanding tape to prevent water ingress.
