What is a sewage pumping station and how does it work?
A pumping station consists of a large tank known as a wet well (manufactured from precast concrete, polyethene, or glass-reinforced plastic), a pump, and an inspection chamber.
Pumping stations work by storing and pumping. The wet well receives sewage from a building, business or a group of buildings, which then sits in the well until it reaches a certain level. At this point, the pump will kick in to pressurise the sewage and pump it out of the wet well to the break chamber. From here, it flows into the main sewer via gravity.

When do you need a pump station?
You will need a pumping station if your property’s base level sits too low for sewage to flow into the main sewer via gravity, and if the cost of the groundworks required for a gravity system outweighs the costs of a pumping station.
You may also need a pumping station if your property’s sewer line runs over a ridge that interrupts gravity’s force.
What are the different types of sewage pumping stations?
There are many types of pumping stations, each falling under different categories.
Types based on ownership:
- Private pumping stations – the owner or developer is responsible for the pumping station after installation
- Adoptable pumping stations – the local water authority takes over responsibility of the pumping station after installation
Types based on design:
- Single and twin effluent pumping stations – for liquid-only effluent
- Single and twin sewage pumping stations – for liquid and solid effluent
- Single and twin grinder pumping stations – for liquid and very hard solid effluent
Types based on UK water regulations:
- Type 1 pumping stations – for fewer than 5 dwellings and an incoming flow rate of <0.25L/S
- Type 2 pumping stations – for 6 to 20 dwellings and an incoming flow rate of between 0.25L/S and 1L/S
- Type 3 pumping stations – for over 20 dwellings and an incoming flow rate of >1L/S with pumps rated <30KW
- Type 4 pumping stations – for very large properties and an incoming flow rate of >1L/S with pumps rated >30KW

Does a sewage pumping station smell?
A sewage pumping station should have absolutely no odour. If, however, you detect an unpleasant smell, it likely means something is wrong, such as a tank leak or a malfunctioning pump. It’s important to call our team or your local drain professionals to diagnose the problem as soon as you smell something off.
What size sewage pumping station do I need?
The tank, or wet well, of your pumping station must be able to hold a certain amount of inflow for 24 hours in case of service disruption. This means that, should the pump fail or you have a power outage, the tank will be able to handle a full 24-hours of sewage.
The size of your sewage pumping station will, therefore, depend on the number of occupants or users.
A person in the UK is said to produce, on average, 150 litres of wastewater per day. If we use this statistic, then we can assume a 2-person household may need a 300-litre tank, a 3-person household will need a 450-litre tank, a 4-person household will need a 600-litre tank, and so on.
